The Honorable George A. O'Toole, Jr.

Judge O'Toole will discuss how experts can improve their presentation, effectiveness, and credibility when testifying. He will explain how the language and demeanor used by the expert can either destroy or greater trust with the jurors and the court. Judge O'Toole will offer suggestions on the proper use of visual aids and demonstrations by expert witnesses. QUESTIONS & ANSWERS. George A. O’Toole, Jr. has served as a United States District Judge for the District of Massachusetts since 1995. He also served as a state court trial judge in Massachusetts from 1982 to 1995. Before joining the bench, he practiced law for ten years with the Boston firm of Hale and Dorr, now Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr, where he specialized in litigation. Judge O’Toole is a graduate of Boston College (A.B. 1969) and Harvard Law School (J.D. 1972).

Frank M. Dattilio, PhD, ABPP

Frank M. Dattilio, Ph.D., ABPP, maintains a dual faculty appointment in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He is a licensed psychologist and is board certified in both clinical psychology and behavioral psychology. Dr. Dattilio is the recipient of numerous awards, including the award for Distinguished Psychologist by the American Psychological Association's Division 29 and the award for Distinguished Contributions to the Science and Profession of Psychology by the Pennsylvania Psychological Association. Dr. Dattilio has more than 230 professional publications and 15 books in the areas of anxiety disorders, forensic and clinical psychology, and marital and family discord. Dr. Dattilio has served as an expert witness to both the prosecution/plaintiff and the defense on the federal and state levels. He has also been court appointed numerous times in both state and federal jurisdictions throughout the United States.

Ryan L. Nilsen, Esq.

Judge Pamela Pryor Dembe has been a Common Pleas judge for over 18 years in Philadelphia, and is the Supervising Judge of the Criminal court operations of the Common Pleas Court with responsibility for 41 courtrooms, 40 judges, and in excess of 10,000 cases. She graduated from Temple University School of Law, and was in private practice for twelve years. She has lectured for PBI, The Pennsylvania Conference of State Trial Judges and the Brehon Law Society. She has taught numerous PBI courses as well as other CLE's. She is chair of the Criminal Procedural Rules Committee of the Board of Judges of the First Judicial District and serves on the Court's Disaster Planning Committee. Frank D. Tinari, Ph.D., is Professor Emeritus of Economics at Seton Hall University and President of the Tinari Economics Group, a consulting practice he founded in 1979, with offices in New Jersey and New York City. He also has taught at Fordham, Pace, Purdue, William Paterson and Drew Universities, and was an invited repeat lecturer at the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing. Tinari holds an earned doctorate, as well as a B.S. ('64) and M.A. ('66) from Fordham University. Dr. Tinari is a member of the American, Western and Eastern Economic Associations, and the American Academy of Economic and Financial Experts, and recently completed a two-year term as President of the National Association of Forensic Economics (NAFE). In 2002 through 2004, he worked closely with Trial Lawyers Care to assist claimants of the 911 Victims Compensation Fund, and testified at dozens of hearings before Special Master Ken Feinberg. The author of a college textbook, Frank is widely published in numerous journals and publications. Michael Brennan, JD, is a Research Analyst at the largest law firm in Michigan - Miller, Canfield, Paddock & Stone, which is headquartered in Detroit. Steven M. Schorr, PE, is President of DJS Associates, Inc., a full-service forensic engineering consulting firm in Abington, PA. He received his BS from Villanova University and his MS in Civil Engineering from Northwestern University. Mr. Schorr has written and lectured extensively on forensic issues and is a highly experienced expert witness. Mr. Schorr is board certified by the National Academy of Forensic Engineers and the International Institute on Forensic Engineering Sciences.
