Summary
This workshop is designed for Workers' Compensation Professionals, Return to Work Coordinators and Health Care Professionals who want to improve their understanding and enhance their abilities to address complex issues related to psychological/mental disorders in the workplace. Presentations will cover psychological integrity, impairment and functional limitations, effective psychological assessment practices as they relate to work capacity, and strategic planning and response to psychological/mental disorders in the workplace. Participants will have opportunities to raise pertinent issues and discuss problems they encounter in their roles or specific work settings. Workshop materials include hard copies of PowerPoint presentations, supplemental readings, and other resource materials.
Program Objectives
Workshop participants will:
Learn about the context of psychological disorders, (i.e., prevalence and 'costs' associated with these disorders). Learn about the relationship between psychological integrity, impairment, and functional limitations. Understand the components of effective psychological assessment practices as they relate to work capacity. Learn how workplace policies and procedures and knowledge of the critical psychosocial demands of the job contribute to effective stay-at-work and return-to-work strategies. Learn how to create accommodation pathways and strengthen work return success for employees with specific psychological disorders. Explore how future advances in treatment of psychological disorders will impact psychological integrity and work capacity.
Distinguished Faculty
Norma J. Leclair RN, PhD, LCPC, is a principal and senior consultant with The Leclair Company, LLC. She is a registered nurse and licensed as a clinical professional counselor. Dr. Leclair has been engaged in the private practice of organizational consultation, group development, and counseling and psychotherapy for more than twenty years. She has worked as a consultant to business and industry, health care systems, public schools, and government agencies and is a leading expert on the relationship between psychiatric impairment and productivity in the workplace. Dr. Leclair was a Visiting Fellow at the International Center for Industry, Labor and Rehabilitation where she participated in the early research and investigation of the relationship between illness, injury, disability and work. She is the founder of Leclair Consultation Center and The Leclair Company where she has focused on the provision of clinical assessment and intervention services, with a special emphasis on work dysfunction. She has spoken and published on a variety of health care topics including psychiatric impairment, delayed recovery, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, HIV, and Hepatitis C. Dr. Leclair earned a Bachelor's degree in Nursing from the University of Maine, a Master's degree in Rehabilitation Counseling from the University of Iowa and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Counseling from The Ohio State University. Steven W. Leclair, PhD, CRC is the Executive Director of Community Partners, Inc., a large non-profit organization in Maine supporting the residential, vocational, health care, and social needs of persons with developmental disabilities. He is also a principal and senior consultant with The Leclair Company, LLC. Steve is a licensed psychologist and a nationally certified rehabilitation counselor with more than 25 years of professional experience as a consultant, clinician, educator, researcher and administrator. Dr. Leclair is an accomplished clinical and program evaluation specialist and an internationally recognized expert on program development and policy related to disability, rehabilitation and work. Dr. Leclair was formerly the Vice President of National Rehabilitation Planners, Director of Research for the International Center for Industry, Labor and Rehabilitation; and Center and Clinical Director of Southwest Community Health Center in Central Ohio. As faculty member at The Ohio State University, he developed and coordinated the graduate program in Rehabilitation Counseling. Dr. Leclair has authored more than 35 publications including books, book chapters, articles, and monographs related to health care, disability prevention, and work. He has also presented more than 40 professional papers on various health care and rehabilitation topics at state, regional, national, and international meetings. During the last 20 years, Dr. Leclair has applied for and was awarded more than $14,000,000 in grants and contracts from federal and state agencies and private foundations to fund program, demonstration, and research projects. Steve earned a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of Maine and Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy Degrees in Rehabilitation Counseling from the University of Iowa.
