Faculty:
William S. Frank, M.A.
, is the country's leading authority on non-clinical careers for physicians. In 1978 he founded CareerLab�, a consulting firm specializing in career management, executive coaching, leadership development, and outplacement. Bill has sold more than 300 consulting contracts to brand-name corporations, including American Cancer Society, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, CIBA Vision, Columbia/HCA, GAMBRO Healthcare, Kaiser Permanente, LifeCare, Medtronic HemoTec, Penn State College of Medicine, and Sunrise Healthcare. In 1998 he founded a subspecialty practice called "The Physician Career Network,"� which became the authority for MDs wanting to improve their careers. PCN has had physician clients from all 50 states in all practice specialties, from anesthesiology to urology. Bill has been featured in "The Physician Executive," "Physician Practice Options," "Physician Financial News," and "Unique Opportunities: �The Physicians's Resource." He authored three best-selling career books and his career articles have appeared in more than 250 business publications and newspapers, from The WSJ's "National Business Employment Weekly," and Forbes.com to The Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Bill earned a B.A. in Liberal Arts (1968) and an M.A. in Philosophy (1969) from Colorado State University.

Terry Fouts, MD joined Great West HealthCare in May of 2003 to fill the newly created position of Chief Medical Officer. In this role Dr. Fouts has national responsibility for all Medical Outreach (SM) programs including care management, quality management, pharmacy, disease management and technical assessment. Prior to joining Great West HealthCare, Dr. Fouts has had several senior level positions in managed care organizations over the past twenty years. Most recently he was at Aetna in Hartford, Connecticut where he was National Medical Director for patient management, prior to that he served as Global Medical Director for Cigna International in Philadelphia with responsibilities in Latin America, Asia and Europe. His managed care career started with the company now known as Health Net where he held multiple national medical leadership positions including CMO. Dr. Fouts started his medical career as a practicing Internist for 13 years.

Steven Babitsky, Esq., is a former trial lawyer who has trained thousands of physicians in the past 25 years. He has over 30 years of experience as a professional negotiator, has himself successfully made the switch from practicing law to a non-clinical career, and is an expert in networking, running a small business, medical-legal opportunities for physicians, responding to tough questions, persuasion skills, consulting, publishing, and turning ideas into money. Attorney Babitsky is the co-author of the best-selling book The Successful Physician Negotiator: How To Get What You Deserve and numerous other publications. He is the creator of the annual Medical Fiction Writing for Physicians seminar and dozens of other seminars for physicians. He is a lively and entertaining trainer and is the President and Founder of SEAK, Inc.

The faculty introduces themselves, explains the goals of the Non-Clinical Careers course and the interactive teaching methodology that will be utilized.

8:45 - 9:30 Selling Yourself and Leveraging Your Medical Degree and Experience into a Non-Clinical Career
In this segment, the faculty will begin by utilizing a demonstration with a volunteer attendee to show the absolute importance of being able to sell yourself. Attendees will then learn specific techniques (with examples) on how to persuasively and confidently articulate how their skills, education, and experience as medical doctors should be characterized as talents that any employer would seek. 9:30 - 10:00 What's Out There For Me? Non-Clinical Careers Physicians are Currently Enjoying
The faculty will review many of the rewarding non clinical career options available to physicians including: consulting, education, management, biotechnology, public service, insurance, utilization review, forensic examinations and consultation, entrepreneur/business owner, media, author, association and non-profit management, risk management, and occupational health. 10:15 - 10:30 Career Transition Flow Chart
Career change is an orderly, structured process with a beginning, middle, and end. The beginning is CareerDiagnosis, the middle is "Market Readiness," and the end result is a job offer or series of consulting assignments. The leaders will present a detailed flow chart that diagrams the process. Questions and Answers

10:30 - 11:15 Being a Physician Consultant
Have you thought about consulting as an option? The group will review the pros and cons of this career choice, and discuss the differences between Lone Ranger, regional, and national firms. The leaders will explain how to break the feast or famine cycle of consulting. Participants will be encouraged to pursue a dual marketing track of part-time, consulting or interim work, while also seeking full time employment. Questions and Answers

11:15 - 12:00 The Physician Entrepreneur: Running your own Business
Most physicians have what it takes to run their own business. In this segment, the faculty will explain the advantages and disadvantages of running your own business, how to start a business, how to take an idea and turn it into a viable business, how to buy into a business, and how to avoid the biggest mistakes physicians make when running their own business. 1:00 - 2:00 Drafting an Eye-Catching Resume
As part of C.V. and resume writing, you'll learn to express your unique value proposition. You'll learn that a C.V. isn't a resume. A C.V. is for academia, whereas a resume is for business. The faculty will explain the difference between a $50,000, $100,000, and $500,000 resume. You'll learn how to turn your C.V. into a competency-based accomplishment-oriented resume. The group will define and discuss "core competencies," and attendees will learn a method to uncover their work "triples and home runs." The faculty will present sample physician resumes. 2:00 - 3:15 Case Studies: How Your Colleagues Are Finding Non-Clinical Careers
The faculty will present and open for discussion 15 concise case studies of physicians who have successfully made the switch to a non-clinical career. Included in each case study is the personal and professional background of the physician, what they were looking for, how they found it, and most importantly, what lessons should be learned from the example. 3:30 - 4:30 Keynote, Terry Fouts, MD: What I learned when making the switch to a non-clinical career.
Dr. Fouts will give a first hand account of switching to a non-clinical career. He will discuss the emotional issues this causes, such as leaving the bedside, guilt, anger, letting your family down and financial worries. He will also explain the most effective techniques he used in his search for a new career. Questions and Answers

4:30 - 4:45 Review, Roundtable and Takeaways

Gaining focus or finding a career direction may be the most difficult part of a change. The leaders will simplify the process immensely by suggesting some easy to complete paper-and-pencil exercises that will give you focus and clarity. They will also direct you to useful books, periodicals, and online resources. Questions and Answers

9:00 - 10:00 Non-Clinical Careers That Are Right For Me: My Birkman Preview �
Faculty will review your Birkman Preview� which is the gold standard diagnostic test (blood test, X-Ray, CT Scan, MRI) for physicians contemplating a career change. Attendees will learn to interpret their report, and they will see a chart showing how MDs compare to business and physician executives. Faculty will lead a group discussion. The results of this diagnostic assessment alone will justify your investment in this seminar. Questions and Answers

10:15 - 10:30 How Long Will It Take?
Each attendee will complete a questionnaire called the ChangeMeter� which estimates how long it will take to transition to a new non-clinical career. The ChangeMeter� incorporates 12 factors, including earnings expectations, size of your network, and spouse/partner buy-in. Questions and Answers

10:30 - 11:30 Drafting Professional and Effective Cover Letters, Thank You Letters and Networking Correspondence
Attendees will learn why a letter to friends and professional acquaintances is "the most important letter you will ever write." The leaders will present a friendship checklist and telephone follow-up script. You will learn to write six cover letters, including recruiters, want ads, thank yous, and direct mail. Participants will receive sample letters from all categories. Questions and Answers

11:30 - 11:45 The Truth About Executive Recruiters
Attendees will learn the realities of working with executive recruiters. The group will discuss contingency versus retained recruiters, how to improve confidentiality, and learn how to reach 1,000 headhunters with the click of a mouse. Physicians will learn what to do and say when headhunters call, and will understand the ins-and-outs of the recruitment process. Questions and Answers

1:00 - 1:45 Networking Secrets that Work
The faculty will review the 5 W's of Networking: who, what, when, where, why, and how. They will explain why 80-90% of high-level jobs come from friends and professional acquaintances, and they will show you how to build a constantly expanding network. They will help you overcome the feeling of using your friends, help you recognize and develop job leads, and explain how to network when you have no time. Questions and Answers

1:45 - 2:30 Nailing Your Job Interview
It can take the fear out of interviewing to realize, "We are all always interviewing." The leaders will review 12 rules for interviewing, such as 1) "Listen 80%/Talk 20%," 2) "No negatives about anything," and 3) "More good than bad." Participants will learn to use "closing comments" to create lasting positive impressions. The group will review and learn to answer the 25 most difficult interview questions, including 1) "Why did you leave?" 2) How are you different?" and 3) "What do you earn?" You'll discuss strategies for group interviews, and learn the full power of thank you notes. You'll be encouraged to "start the job before you are hired," and learn when and how to use references. 2:45 - 3:45 Negotiating Job Offers
The faculty will present strategies for negotiating multiple offers, stalling for a better offer, and making a counteroffer. The group will discuss letters of agreement, employment contracts, and employment attorneys. The leaders will explain how to start a new job on the right foot, and how to announce the job to sustain your network. Questions and Answers

3:45 - 4:30 Making It Happen: Sample Action Plans for Non-Clinical Careers
An action plan is a two-page document detailing to-dos for the next year to find a new job. During this module the faculty will review sample action plans that can be used to find non-clinical careers. Attendees will be able to make their own action plans which will be their roadmap to success and happiness in the years to come. Questions and Answers
