Robert L. Satcher Jr, Ph.D., MD, NASA Astronaut

Dr. Satcher will explain how he went from Denmark-Olar High School in Denmark, South Carolina to becoming an orthopedic surgeon and NASA astronaut. Dr. Satcher will share his NASA journey from applying, acceptance, and training, to his 259 hours in space, and 2 space walks totaling over 12 hours. Dr. Satcher will describe the world of opportunities and possibilities open for physicians outside of clinical medicine.

Robert L. Satcher Jr., Ph.D., MD is a board certified orthopedic surgeon and an assistant professor at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University and a NASA astronaut. In February 2006 he completed Astronaut Candidate Training that included scientific and technical briefings, intensive instruction in Shuttle and International Space Station systems, physiological training, T-38 flight training, and water and wilderness survival training. Satcher completed his first flight on STS-129 in November 2009 and has logged over 259 hours in space, including 12 hours and 19 minutes in 2 EVAs. STS-129 (November 16-29, 2009) was the 31st shuttle flight to the International Space Station. During the mission the crew delivered two Express Logistics Carriers (ELC racks) to the International Space Station, about 30,000 pounds of replacement parts for systems that provide power to the station, keep it from overheating, and maintain proper orientation in space. During the mission Satcher performed two spacewalks for a total of 12 hours and 19 minutes of EVA. The STS-129 mission was completed in 10 days, 19 hours, 16 minutes and 13 seconds, traveling 4.5 million miles in 171 orbits, and returned to Earth bringing back with them NASA Astronaut, Nicole Stott, following her tour of duty aboard the Space Station.

John Ferry, MD

Dr. Ferry will review how to prepare for your interview and the questions you want to ask. He will discuss the significance of the initial impression you make, the questions you are likely to be asked, and the best way to respond to them. Dr. Ferry will review the biggest mistakes to avoid during your interview and will offer practical advice on how to prepare for and excel at your non-clinical interview.

John Ferry, MD is a Senior Client Partner in the Boston office of Korn/Ferry International, and a member of the Firm’s Global Healthcare Services Market. With more than two decades of experience within the healthcare services field, Dr. Ferry specializes in the recruitment and leadership development of senior-level executives in this market. Prior to joining Korn/Ferry, he was senior vice president for The Hunter Group (a unit of Navigant Consulting, Inc.). In that capacity, he served as a senior consultant providing advisory services in the areas of hospital and health systems management, business development, compliance, health insurance, graduate medical education, organizational development and strategic planning. Dr. Ferry received his master’s in business administration from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and earned his M.D. as well as his bachelor’s degree in biological and medical sciences from Brown University. He served his internship and residency at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons in New York.

Donald Gonzales, MD

Dr. Gonzales will discuss how physicians can achieve success as a physician inventor and make a difference in the lives of patients. He will explain how to turn problems that physicians encounter in their clinical practices to viable ideas and patentable and successful products. Dr. Gonzales will review how to protect your ideas/concepts, obtain financial backing, and create products that are lucrative and can help patients worldwide.

Donald Gonzales, MD is an inventor and belongs to a rare class of clinical entrepreneurs who successfully blend their clinical experience and business outlook to address unmet needs within the medical community. In 2004, he formed the first of several companies including Xorbent Technologies, Xorbent L.L.C. and Xorbent, Inc., that would eventually merge to become ENTrigue Surgical, Inc. ENTrigue Surgical is an ear, nose and throat medical device company that has raised more than $26M in venture capital funding. He has also performed cutting-edge research at the Cardiovascular Research Center at Massachusetts General Hospital, Memorial Sloan Kettering, Strang Cancer Institute at Rockefeller University, and Cornell University. Dr. Gonzales has also had active clinical practices as a staff physician at Tulane University and in private practice in Beverly, MA. Dr. Gonzales graduated from Gordon College and Cornell University Medical College, then completed his residency in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at Tulane University School of Medicine. He is also listed as an inventor on more than twenty patents and patent applications for devices and methods in ENT surgical applications.

Michael Apkon, MBA, MD, PhD

Dr. Apkon will review how and why he went into administration and the opportunities available, what they consist of, and how to get your foot in the door. Dr. Apkon will discuss what additional training/experience is helpful when moving to administration and the difference physicians in administration can make. He will offer practical advice and suggestion for physicians considering transitioning from clinical medicine to administration.

Michael Apkon MBA, MD, PhD is the Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs and the Chief Medical Officer for the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He is also a Professor in Anesthesiology and Critical Care at the University of Pennsylvania and a practicing Pediatric Intensive Care specialist. In his capacity as Chief Medical Officer, he is responsible for: leading clinical quality and safety improvement efforts across the delivery network; overseeing measures to maintain hospital accreditation and regulatory compliance; and, providing executive oversight for operations in the Cardiac Center, network hospital affiliates, and primary care network. Prior to joining CHOP, he was the Vice President and Executive Director at Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital and a Clinical Associate Professor in Pediatrics at Yale School of Medicine and the Yale School of Management. In that role he was responsible for strategic and operational leadership in the delivery of healthcare services to children across the continuum of care. Previously, Dr. Apkon served as the Vice President for Performance Management of the Yale New Haven Health System, responsible for leading quality and operation improvement across a three hospital system. He has held leadership positions in Academic Medicine as the Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs in Pediatrics and Medical Director of the New Clinical Program Development Fund, an internal venture philanthropy fund aimed at developing clinical programs at Yale.

Jim Metropoulos, MD

Jim Metropoulos, MD is a physician with a unique experience and perspective on the role of healthcare communications in clinical medicine and patient outcomes. Dr. Metropoulos has been a senior executive in healthcare communications for the past 18 years. Over this time he has advanced progressively to positions of increasing responsibility. He was Chief Strategic Officer, North America, for Lowe McAdams Healthcare where he established a highly successful, clinician-based Strategic Planning practice modeled after Account Planning at consumer agencies. This resulted in his being promoted to Chief Strategic Officer for Lowe McAdams Healthcare Worldwide, a position focused on global network strategic planning and acquisitions. In 2002 Dr. Metropoulos was appointed Chief Strategic Officer at Sudler & Hennessey (a division of Young and Rubicam) where he was charged with managing business development and the Strategic Planning practice. Dr. Metropoulos is the only physician to have led full service healthcare communications agencies first as Co-President of Sudler & Hennessey and as CEO of Euro RSCG Life Worldwide, the global healthcare communications network of Euro RSCG Worldwide and Havas, Inc. Lynn Helmer, MD, FACP, MBA, FACPE, exemplifies the concept of physician executives as leaders. She combines a strong background in clinical internal medicine with an advanced business degree and additional training and experience in the world of quality management. Her career to date includes more than 25 years of clinical practice, several years in an academic setting, combining teaching, practice and clinical research and several positions as a senior hospital executive. Currently she is the president of DRD Consulting, Inc., a consulting firm focused on executive leadership development, strategic planning, business growth and quality improvement, both within and outside of healthcare. Judy Harrison, MD

Dr. Harrison will present an overview of the varied non-clinical roles physicians play in the biopharmaceutical industry. She will discuss the job responsibilities for positions in several areas such as clinical research, drug safety and pharmacovigilance, regulatory affairs, and medical affairs. Dr. Harrison will explain where and how to pursue new career opportunities in biopharmaceutical companies and contract research organizations. Dr. Harrison will offer insight into how working in the industry differs from clinical medicine and how to go about making the transition.

Judy Harrison, MD is president of Harrison Clinical Consulting LLC, a clinical research and pharmacovigilance consulting company. She has 20 years’ experience in clinical research in the pharmaceutical industry including positions at Bayer in the U.K. and Schering-Plough in the U.S. She is a Medical Officer in the MedDRA Maintenance and Support Services Organization (MSSO) which maintains and develops the international medical terminology used for adverse event reporting. Dr. Harrison is the chair of a Data Safety Monitoring Board for the National Institutes of Health and is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Dr. Harrison received her undergraduate degree from the University of Cambridge and her medical degree from the University of Oxford.

Brian J. Knabe, MD, CMP, CFP, FAAFP

Dr. Knabe will explain the many and varied positions in the financial industry and the compensation structure for these positions. He will discuss the unique abilities and qualities physicians bring to the table, and the professional designations and certification available. Dr. Knabe will offer practical bottomline advice on how to position yourself as an expert and leverage your experience as a physician to transition into the financial industry.

Brian J. Knabe, MD, CMP, CFP, FAAFP is a financial advisor at Savant Capital Management in Rockford, IL. Brian is a financial advisor and a member of the Advisory Team. He draws upon his experience from the medical field as he works with clients, advisors, portfolio managers, and planners in order to develop comprehensive planning, investment, and tax strategies for professionals. Brian is a magna cum laude graduate of Marquette University with an honors degree in biomedical engineering. He earned his medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine and has earned the Degree of Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians (FAAFP). Brian also attended the University of Illinois for his family practice residency, where he served as chief resident. Brian is a Certified Medical Planner (CMPTM), has earned a Certificate in Financial Planning from Marquette University, and recently received his Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) designation. Brian is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Family Medicine with the University of Illinois. He is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Illinois State Medical Society, and the Catholic Medical Association. He serves on the Executive Committee at the
University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford, and on the Executive Board for the Blackhawk Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America as well as the Haven Network board. Brian joined Savant in January 2007.

Peter C. Johnson, MD

Peter C. Johnson, MD is the Vice President of Research and Development of Avery Dennison Medical Products, Inc. and is President and CEO of Scintellix, LLC, a biomedical technology consulting company in Raleigh, NC and is a serial entrepreneur. He was educated at the University of Notre Dame and the SUNY Upstate Medical University. He completed General Surgery and Plastic Surgery residencies at Case-Western Reserve University and the University of Pittsburgh, respectively. Dr. Johnson practiced reconstructive surgery for ten years on the University of Pittsburgh faculty where he founded and was the first President of the Pittsburgh Tissue Engineering Initiative, after which he co-founded and was CEO of TissueInformatics.Inc. Subsequent roles have included Executive Vice President of Life Sciences, Chief Medical Officer and Chief Business Officer of Icoria, Inc. and Executive Vice President, Entegrion, Inc. Dr. Johnson is a past Chairperson of the Plastic Surgery Research Council, President of the Pennsylvania Biotechnology Association, the Tissue Engineering Society, International and is presently the Co-Editor-in-Chief of the three-part Journal, Tissue Engineering. He serves on the Board of Trustees of the Pittsburgh Tissue Engineering Initiative, Renacyte, LLC and the University of North Carolina Medical Foundation. He serves as the National Chairman of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine Medical Excellence Fund.

Edward Chekan, MD, FACS

Kip Webb, MD, MPH

Dr. Kip Webb leads Accenture’s Clinical Solutions practice. Dr. Webb has over 25 years of broad-based health care experience to, including 10 years of clinical practice. His provider consulting practice has concentrated on process redesign and IT application integration in a variety of operational areas. Prior to coming to Accenture, Dr. Webb served on the faculties of Stanford University and Tufts University Medical Schools. There, his academic work concentrated on clinical decision analysis, pharmacoeconomic and medical outcomes research. He has worked with leading academic research institutions around the World and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He is the author of several peer reviewed articles and has been a contributor to Nelson’s Textbook of Pediatrics.

John M. Mendez, MD

Dr. Mendez will discuss the numerous and varied opportunities available for physicians in the disability insurance field and how to obtain them. John M. Mendez, MD is medical director for CIGNA Group Insurance Disability Management Solutions in Dallas, TX. Dr. Mendez received his BS in biology from Loyola University and his MD from the University of California College of Medicine in Irvine, CA. Dr. Mendez is board certified in internal medicine and occupational medicine. Dr. Mendez was previously a physician advisor and national medical director for IntraCorp Medical Review Services.

Karen Amstutz, MD

Dr. Amstutz will review the nature of the managed care and health insurance fields and how they present several potential opportunities available to physicians. She will discuss how physicians can make a significant difference in the lives of patients and the community when entering these fields and how physicians can prepare themselves for entry. Dr. Amstutz will offer practical advice on how physicians can locate, obtain and succeed in positions in the managed care and health insurance fields.

Karen Amstutz, MD is the Vice President Medical Director at WellPoint, Inc. overseeing the Consumer Business segments of Senior and State Sponsored Business. Her responsibilities include the medical management strategy for health coverage for underserved and uninsured populations through government programs such as Medicaid, State Children’s Health Insurance Programs (SCHIP), Medicare Advantage and other publicly funded programs. She manages a dynamic staff of physicians leading innovations in quality medical care across the country.

B. Making the Successful Transition to Non-Clinical Medicine: I Did it and So Can You
Brian Armstrong, MD

Dr. Armstrong will discuss a process for physicians considering a non-clinical career, including: developing an action plan, time frame assessment, and how and when to begin your search. He will explain the mistakes to avoid during the application and interview process and the utility of getting an MBA. Dr. Armstrong will offer practical suggestions for physicians for a successful transition, based both, on his personal experience, and from the perspective of a chief medical officer responsible for hiring physicians.

Brian Armstrong, MD is the chief medical officer for CareCore Cardiology Management, a division of CareCore National LLC. At CareCore, he implemented the first cardiac device notification plan in the nation and has oversight of physician and staff recruiting and evaluations. Dr. Armstrong received his BA from Pittsburgh State University and MD from Washington University School of Medicine. He attended and participated in the 2006 SEAK Non-Clinical Careers for Physicians Conference and then made a successful transition to non-clinical medicine.

A. Medical Informatics: Opportunities for Physicians and How to Obtain Them
William F. Bria II, MD

Dr. Bria will review the numerous opportunities available to physicians in medical informatics, including: full and part-time positions, consulting, vendors, academia, providers, and the government. He will explain how informatics differs from clinical practice, including: typical challenges, skills and core competencies needed to succeed, rewards, salaries, and expectations. Dr. Bria will offer practical suggestions for physicians considering transitioning to medical informatics and will offer advice on how to land your first informatics position.

William F. Bria II, MD is chief medical information officer for Shriners Hospital for Children, and directs the medical informatics plan for the 22 hospital SHC system across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. He is a pulmonary/critical care physician and clinical associate professor at the University of Michigan and the University of South Florida. He continues to practice medicine at the Tampa VA Hospital. He has been a leader in applied medical informatics for over 20 years, and has authored numerous articles and books on informatics. He is a fellow in the American College of Chest Physicians. Dr. Bria is currently the president of the Association of Medical Directors of Information Systems and serves on the editorial boards of Healthcare Informatics and Modern Healthcare. He is past president of the Medical Information Systems Physicians Association. He is currently engaged in research and applied medical informatics and has developed a new 5-year combined M.D./master’s program for informatics at the University of Michigan. In 2010 he was named to the Top 25 CMIOs in America by Healthcare Informatics.

B. Medical Science Liaison and Medical Affairs: Opportunities Available for Physicians
Robin Winter-Sperry, MD

Dr. Winter-Sperry will discuss the opportunities available for physicians in the field of Medical Science Liaisons (MSL) and Medical Affairs. She will explain the current state of the professors, how to get your foot in the door, what employers are looking for, compensation, and career development. Dr. Winter-Sperry will explain why physicians moving into Medical Science Liaison and Medical Affairs positions love them and make a difference in the lives of patients.

Dr. Robin Winter-Sperry serves as the President and CEO of Scientific Advantage, LLC. Dr. Winter-Sperry has held a number of senior management and Medical Affairs positions at leading pharmaceutical companies. She created Novartis’ MSL department of Scientific Operations and Sanofi-Synthelabo’s Medical Therapeutic Liaison division. She has pioneered the recognition of MSLs as a specialty in the biopharmaceutical and device industry and is responsible for creating and developing many of the industry’s leading medical affairs and medical liaison teams. Dr. Winter-Sperry holds an assistant professorship in Dermatology at Mt. Sinai in Manhattan and holds an adjunct professorship at the Rutgers School of Pharmacy. She was named in August 2005 by PharmaVoice to be one of the industry’s 100 most inspiring people. She’s served on the global board of the Healthcare Women’s Association (HBA) and was the recipient of the “Tribute to Women” award by the Boy Scouts in 2010.

A. How to Succeed in Business: Practical Lessons for Physicians
Andrew B. Becker, MD, PhD

Dr. Becker will explain what it takes for physicians to move out of clinical medicine and succeed in the current business world environment. He will discuss the specific skill sets and abilities that businesses look for and how physicians can meet their needs. Dr. Becker will describe how the corporate culture differs from clinical medicine. He will offer practical suggestions for being interviewed, hired, and developing the corporate sensitivities, mentality and survival skills for physicians to succeed in the business world.

Andrew B. Becker, MD, PhD is the co-founder of Becker Pharmaceuticals Consulting, a healthcare consulting firm providing business intelligence and market research to pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and device companies. He received his MD and Ph.D. in molecular pharmacology from Stanford University. Dr. Becker’s firm interviews 500-2,000 physicians per year for the pharmaceutical and medical device industry. Dr. Becker is the primary moderator for qualitative market research studies with physicians, including key opinion leaders and other healthcare providers, for in-licensing assessments and new product planning for Client companies. Becker Pharmaceutical Consulting has conducted 15 to 40 in-licensing and company acquisition assessments annually since 1993, in addition to its work in new product planning and product strategy.

B. Negotiation Skills for Physicians: What You Need to Know to Succeed
James J. Mangraviti, Jr., Esq.

Attorney James Mangraviti will explain the absolute importance of negotiation skills in making yourself a more attractive candidate, being successful in the non-clinical world, and negotiating the best possible compensation package for your first non-clinical position. Attorney Mangraviti will demonstrate proven negotiation tactics, defenses to these tactics, how to build power and leverage in a negotiation, and numerous simple questions you can ask in any negotiation to easily improve your results.

James J. Mangraviti, Jr., Esq. is an attorney and negotiating expert who is one of the creators and trainers for the Negotiating Skills for Physicians hands-on workshop. He has been negotiating for his business and on behalf of clients for over 15 years. He is the co-author of three books on Negotiating: Never Lose Again: Become a Top Negotiator by Asking the Right Questions (St. Martins 2011), The Physician’s Comprehensive Guide To Negotiating (SEAK 2007), and The Successful Physician Negotiator: How to Get What You Deserve (SEAK 1998).

Edward C. Alvino, MD is Vice President and Lead Medical Director for Unum in Worcester, Massachusetts. Dr. Alvino is board certified in internal medicine. He was in the private practice of internal medicine and
geriatrics prior to joining Unum. Dr. Alvino is a part-time faculty/lecturer at Assumption College in Worcester, MA on the “Medical Aspects of Disability” and “Medical Rehabilitation”.

Bart Cobert, MD, FACP, FACG, FFPM, BLCMD Associates, LLC (Westfield, NJ)
Barton Lewis Cobert, MD, FACP, FACG, FFPM has had a long, distinguished career in pharmacovigilance, drug safety and risk management. He was senior director pharmacovigilance for Schering-Plough Research Institute and held similar positions for Novartis Consumer Health Inc. and Medidata Solutions. He has represented his company and Pharma at many international meetings and organizations including the International Conference on Harmonization (ICH). Dr. Cobert received his BA from New York University and his MD from New York University School of Medicine. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. He has written and lectured extensively both nationally and internationally on pharmacovigilance. He has written three books on drug safety including the Manual of Drug Safety and Pharmacovigilance which is used as a textbook in courses on drug safety. Dr. Cobert is president of BLCMD Associated LLC, a drug safety and pharmacovigilance consulting company in Westfield, NJ.

John E. Gardella, MD, FHM, Novant Health (Charlotte, NC)
John is a board certified internist and pulmonologist who currently serves as VP for Clinical Improvement for Novant Health in Charlotte, NC. John attended New York University School of Medicine, and did his postgraduate training at the N.Y.U. Medical Center. John currently works on many projects related to quality and patient safety, and also works part time as a hospitalist.

She has spent the past ten years advising and coaching other doctors in their career by counseling physicians on business skills and acumen and personal wellness and balance. W. Richey Neuman, MD, MPH, FACP, Pfizer Pharmaceuticals (Collegeville, PA)
W. Richey Neuman, MD, MPH, is Vice President and Disease Area Lead for Vaccines at Pfizer Pharmaceuticals.  Dr. Neuman is in the leadership group in charge of Pfizer’s global vaccine strategy, which includes activities pertaining to Prevenar 13 pediatric vaccine, the proposed adult indication for the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, and activities for pipeline vaccines including Meningitis B and S. Aureus vaccines. Dr. Neuman joined Wyeth (now Pfizer) in 2005 after a career in academic internal medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and has held several roles in Global Medical Affairs during his pharmaceutical career.

Robert F. Priddy is the Executive Director of Physicians Career Practice and a Birkman Consultant. His physician experiences began in 1981 with practice startups as a hospital executive and rapidly expanded to the recruitment and placement of more than 100 physicians from Norfolk, Virginia to Peoria, Illinois. Ryung Suh, MD, MPP, MBA, MPH, Atlas Research LLC (Washington, DC)
Ryung Suh, MD, MPP, MBA, MPH, is Chief Executive Officer for Atlas Research and serves as Associate Professor for Health Systems Administration at Georgetown University.  He holds additional faculty appointments at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and Georgetown University’s School of Medicine, and he served as a Senior Fellow for the National Opinion Research Center (NORC) at the University of Chicago.  Dr. Suh is board-certified in occupational medicine and is a Fellow of the American College of Preventive Medicine (FACPM) and the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (FACOEM).  He serves on the board of directors of the American Association of Public Health Physicians (AAPHP), on the board of directors for the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC), and on the American Medical Association Common Procedural Terminology (CPT) Editorial Panel Advisory Committee, as well as various leadership positions within other professional organizations and medical specialty societies. 

Ross M. Tonkens, MD, FACP, CardioBio Consulting (Research Triangle Park, NC)
Dr. Tonkens is founder and CEO of CardioBio Consulting, an international firm offering specialized clinical development consulting services to pharma and biotech clients, assisting them in moving their technologies from molecule to market.  These services include everything from assisting startups with obtaining funding and designing development programs to overseeing the conduct of global clinical trials and assuring the medical and scientific validity of their data as well as their regulatory compliance.  Prior to CardioBio Consulting he built the clinical development core of  MDS Pharma's Development and Regulatory Services division, took Regado Biosciences, an innovative biotech, from first in human trials through spectacularly successful proof of concept in PCI of their instantly reversible anticoagulant, and led a global team of cardiologists  at Quintiles, the world's largest contract research organization, in conducting global cardiovascular "mega-trials."  He has also participated in placement of over $500 million in private equity funding. His extensive bibliography includes recent publications in such peer reviewed journals as CIRCULATION and the JOURNAL OF THROMBOSIS and HEMOSTASIS, as well as the regulatory literature.  He also recently coauthored and edited a book on due diligence in pharmaceutical equity and partnering deals.  Dr. Tonkens received both his BA and MD degrees from Yale University, and has served on the teaching faculties of both UCLA and the University of Nevada.

James Wood, MD, Wood Medical Consulting (Charlotte, NC)
Dr. Wood is president of Wood Medical Consulting and is a clinical assistant professor of medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. Dr. Wood is board certified in internal medicine and nephrology and has extensive experience in utilization reviews.
